Over = the years=20 as her areas of expertise broadened and her place of = honor at=20 the forefront of synthesis and electronic music = production=20 became widely acknowledged, she always set the highest = standards, - both musical and technical, - through her = keen=20 esthetic sense and meticulous attention to=20 detail.

Wendy always seemed to be the first to = grasp=20 the musical potential of new electronic music gear = and, at the=20 same time, to accept responsibility for developing the = discipline necessary to use the new instruments to = produce=20 music of the highest quality. The unprecedented = popularity of=20 Switched-on Bach, which Wendy released at a time of = great=20 ferment in our popular musical culture, was at once = strikingly=20 innovative and of breathtakingly high musical quality. = I=20 remember the occasion on which Switched-on Bach was = first=20 played in public. Davidovsky's Synchronisms = No. 11 and=20 12 to be premiered at SEAMUS = 2006

I'm=20 very pleased to announce that, as part of our = celebration of=20 the 20th anniversary of the founding of SEAMUS, the = Society=20 for ELectro-Acoustic Music in the United States has to = joined=20 a consortium of institutions that are commissioning = the=20 renowned composer Mario Davidovsky to write two new=20 electroacoustic works in honor of his 70th birthday. = SEAMUS=20 will contribute the standard fee of $2,000 required to = join=20 the consortium, but it will also serve as the umbrella = organization for the commission, coordinating various = aspects=20 of the project and collecting and dispersing the = funds. In=20 return, the Davidovsky commission will be officially = connected=20 to our 20th anniversary celebration, and the world = premieres=20 of the new works will take place at our national = conference.=20 Other institutions who have joined the consortium to = date are=20 The University of Oregon, Brandeis University, = Columbia=20 University, Harvard University, University of Missouri = Kansas=20 City, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, = Rice=20 University, The University of Texas at Austin, = University of=20 North Texas.

The two new pieces will be = Synchronisms=20 No. 11 and 12, respectively. Synchronisms No. 11 will = be for=20 contrabass, and written for Donald Palma. Synchronisms = No. 12=20 will be for bass clarinet, and written for Allen = Blustine.=20 Davidovsky plans to complete the first work in time = for a=20 world premiere at the 2006 SEAMUS National=20 Conference.

I am personally very excited about = the fact=20 that SEAMUS will be taking the lead in this important=20 commission, which will result in the creation of two = new works=20 of historical significance. Without question, these = pieces=20 will be published, recorded, and performed numerous = times.=20 They will be reviewed in places like the New York = Times; they=20 will be in every major music library; they will be = analyzed by=20 theorists and scholars.
